Asy-Spi Problems

Postby Kapt`n Hannes on Mon Apr 14, 2008 2:07 pm

Hi 40.7 ers,

The best wife in the world and my humble self participate mainly in two handed races. We have a problem with the Asy-Spi in that whenever a heavy gust comes we tend to round up (with dire consequences) Now the problem is that even when anticipating the "Gust" and driving off, the boat just leans and rounds up and there is nothing (and I mean nothing) that seems to be able to stop it. even dumping the sheets doesn`t seem to make much difference. Taken we have only minimum weight on the rail with a 2,40m draught this should not be "so tender". Has anyone else found that the 40.7 has a tendency to "round up" when hit by a gust?

After fairing the keel and Rudder, this has gotten better but it still fills us both with trepidation on a gusty Day when we are confronted with the spi up or not question.

Hannes :(

Hi Hannes,

My wife and myself also sail our 40.7 2 up. We just cruise. My impression of the boat is that is slightly tender - with just 2 up and requires the normal 6 or so bodies on the rail to complement the righting effect of the keel.

Very interested in your post as I have ordered an asymetric for this year. It would be great to know the sort of wind speeds and directions which give you trouble. As we don't race I have gone for a modest area.

David.
