First 40.7 steering

Postby nikosail on Mon Aug 24, 2009 7:25 pm

I have just bought a first 40.7 built in 2000.
During the delivery trip I have noticed that I had too much weather helm. Specially on reaching - broad reaching, it was almost impossible to bear off and the boat was easily broaching.
Do you have some advice on this problem?

Yes, when we bought our 40.7 distinction we had BIG problems with rounding up and heavy steering.
I then faired the keel and took all the aft concavity away (3kg epoxy filler ) we then did the same with the rudder. The keel and rudder now go STRAIGHT from the widest part to the aft end of the keel (trailing edge) without any concave form.
SInce this day the difference is unbelievable, faster and higher on the wind and much more balanced. I also blunted the trailing edge. We can now sail higher with just two people, (twohanded) than before with full crew and five on the rail. Except when flying the asymetric spinnaker in gusty weather.

Thank you for your reply.
What I have concluded, about our boat, is that the down rudder bearing is jammed into its "nest". (the previous owner had never sealed it, or remove the rudder).
Althought I have tryed to lower the rudder (the boat in the water), it was impossible to be lowered more than 1 -2mm. I intend to try again when the boat will be out of the water.
What you propose is very interresting. Can you please provide me with more information (what do you mean "I faired the keel"?) , or plans?
Which are advantages and disadvantages after this conversion?
What problem do you face when flying the asymetric spinnaker in gusty weather?
