Leak

Postby BlueSky on Thu Apr 23, 2009 7:27 am

Gentlemen and Ladies,
Hope you don't mind me joining your forum. I own a 40.7 in Australia.

I have a question regarding a leak that I can't track down. It appears through the light above the toilet of all places. Some water also appears in the bottom shelf in the cupboard adjacent to the toilet.

I have the mast extremely well sealed at the mast collar...plenty of Sikka, so I now don't even get any water down the back of the mast.

Does anyone have any idea on where to attack first??? I suspect that it gets into the space above the headliner and can feel a little dampness if I reach over the lip of the headliner into the little "channel" that runs around the outside edge of it in the main cabin, but how it get there has me stumped.

More water appears when at sea with waves over deck, but there is still water when the boat is in the marina after a rain event.

Any thoughts would greatly be appreciated.

Cheers
Richard

Leak revisited

Postby Kapt`n Hannes on Sat May 16, 2009 5:23 am

Hi Richard,

does this "leak" make itself known after beating to the wind???
We had a problem like this on the port side. The port side cupboard would be wet and everything in it damp.
We first thought it was coming in through the forward hatch but that was impossible because everything outside of the cupboard was dry.

I then realised that the water in fill hose went up to the deck in the corner of this cupboard!!!! The cause was a leaking hose at the deck end. Evertime we were going to windward (port) the water from the port tank was sloshing up the hose to the deck and leaking out into the cupboard.

Could this be the cause on your boat.
Or is it because you guys down under, sail around upside down all day???

regards and welcome to the damp squid forum.

Hannes

Hannes,
thanks for your response. I hadn't thought of checking if the deck filler pipe is leaking at deck level. I'll check it. It certainly does happen when going to windward, but I hadn't associated it with heeling to starboard in this case.....maybe.
Thanks
Richard

Richard

Welcome to the Forum! We need more people posting messages exactly like yours so thanks for making the effort!

I seem to recall a similar leak on Incognito that was tough to track down. I think in the end we narrowed it down to the shroud fitting through the deck.

Good luck tracing it!!
